Born in Tasmania Wade made the move to Victoria in 2007 to improve his chance of regular State games and Australian selection. The move paid off in 2011 after two outstanding domestic seasons with selection in the Australian T20 side.
In Wade’s debut Test series in 2012 against the West Indies he scored his first hundred for Australia on a big turning and bouncing pitch. He has since gone on to represent Australia in all formats.
In 2013 Matthew Wade was named as captain of Victoria which he led to the 2014/15 and 2015/16 Sheffield Shield titles. In 2013 took his maiden first class wicket which was Joe Burns. In January 2017 he made his maiden ODI Century scoring 100 Not Out. He has returned to his home state of Tasmania ahead of the 2017/18 Australian summer.
The fact that he played any international cricket at all was a credit to his self-belief and his mental toughness: when only 16, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and required two cycles of chemotherapy to defeat the illness.
